Rumors Are Swirling About A Possible ‘Marvel Vs. Capcom 4’ And It’s Causing A Tug Of War Between Fans

There’s nothing quite like rumors that persist for beloved series, be it movies, tv, or video games. Fans will always get their hopes up and infighting is sure to follow as rumors sprout, rumors die, and reality begins to set in. Think about everything that flowed out about Star Wars or Game of Thrones on a weekly basis until rumor became reality. Video games probably deal with this more than anything given the development cycle of a game, the time it takes to put something together, and the ferocity of the fans who want to throw their money at game developers.

Personally, I’m still hoping that the rumors of an Onimusha remake/revival are true, but I’ll take this one if it turns out to be true. The Playstation Experience lands in Anaheim to kick off December, with a slew of games making an appearance to play on the floor. According to International Business Times, the first day of presentations are being kept secret:

Sony is making over 100 games available for playing at PSX which will also feature six developer panels. Three of those panels, all of them on the first day of the event, are being kept a secret and the company says they “will be worth the wait!”

What the secret is currently is up in the air, but the return of the Capcom Cup to the event and a slew of rumors over the past few months have fans piinting to one possible return at the expo:

That’s right, a fourth entry in the Marvel Vs. Capcom series could very well be on the way. Or it’s not and everything is just a very high quality fake. This is the seesaw of emotion that fans have been on for a while now with numerous confirmations and denials along the way:

GameZone broke down the rumors and possible confirmations surrounding Marvel Vs. Capcom 4, using NeoGAF as a barometer for the truthiness of a rumor based on their track record. It’s good work because it takes the images seen above into account, claiming they look very real and “If they are fake, it was a very fast turnaround and someone must’ve spent their entire day working on these elaborate fakes.” People aren’t above doing that, though, and they’ve even gone so far as to create entire fake consoles in an effort to fool fans, like with the Nintendo NX according to Cinema Blend.

Plus it seems that most fans can’t decide if things are real or fake these days, even casting doubt on the images we’ve seen:

It was at least a decade between Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 and the last gen sequel that brought the series from 2D to 3D gaming. A good indicator of how these games seem to be coming from Capcom would be looking at the Street Fighter series, something GameZone agrees with. Street Fighter V just saw a release earlier in 2016, a follow up to Street Fighter IV in 2008. The fourth game was supported up until 2013, with several versions and little bit of criticism over how content was added to the game. Marvel Vs. Capcom 3 featured similar controversy after its initial release, forcing some changes in the newer fighter games in the company.

So given we’ve been close to 5 years since the release of Ultimate MvC 3, we could be close to at least knowing that a game is on the way. Development could be happening and the release might be announced next weekend at Playstation Experience. Or it won’t be. Crackpot theories and time deciphering aside, there’s no way to know until the game is finally announced or everything is leaked online by some disgruntled employee. A new MvC game would be fun and fans are clearly interested given some of the reactions online.

So keep an eye peeled next weekend and hope that something good comes out of it.
