Billy Corgan, Professional Wrestling Mogul

Last night I was reading an insane piece on Courtney Love in the new issue of Vanity Fair (more on that later) and Billy Corgan’s name came up in the article, which got me to thinking about he and the Smashing Pumpkins and how I regret never seeing them perform live in their heyday and wondering what Corgan and the band are up to now. So then this morning, like clockwork, I of course ran across a report from the Fox affiliate in Chicago in which Corgan announces that he’s starting an “indie” pro wrestling company.

“I’ve been involved sort of behind the scenes with pro wrestling for about a decade and made a lot of friends in the business,” Corgan said on Good Day Chicago. “It’s a very insular business and it’s a long story, but I essentially got involved with some brothers who had a wrestling promotion. We decided to form our own promotion and we’re going to try to bring back to the glory days…We kind of want to go back to a more old school kind of feel.”

Billy Corgan is maybe gonna be the indie Vince McMahon. How funny is that?

Additionally, Stereogum notes that Corgan’s company has already amassed an impressive stable of wrestling talent…

The company also features recent WWE veteran Harry Smith (the British Bulldog’s son), as well as big-name indie-level talents like Teddy Hart, the Briscoe Brothers, El Generico, Kevin Steen, Kyle O’Reilly, Gran Akuma, Arik Cannon, Icarus, Frightmare, Hallowicked, and Necro Butcher, the last of whom you might know from that fucked-up scene in The Wrestler where he destroys Mickey Rourke with a staple gun.

I have to say, I’m totally behind this. I absolutely LOVED wrestling as a kid but lost interest when it went mainstream, so to speak. Anyone remember Mid South Wrestling? That was the sh*t, my friends! And the old WWF had it all over the WWE. Though I have to say, Brandon’s wrestling coverage over at With Leather has begun to rekindled my interest a bit.

Anyway, here’s the full interview with Corgan…
