Binging With Babish has found tons of success on YouTube as a cooking show that makes foods taken directly from the entertainment fans love to watch. Not all of the things made on the show are practical, and some of them are downright gross, but it’s a really innovative way to bring TV shows and movie props into the tangible, edible world.
But Babish had some special help from a show’s star when he recreated the bread a minor character makes for Arya Stark in Game of Thrones. On Tuesday, Binging With Babish dropped an episode where chef Andrew Rea created Hotpie’s Direwolf Bread with help from Maisie Williams, who played Arya on the show.
At first, the episode has the traditional Binging With Babish style where his face is never shown and the focus is on his hands and what’s being made. When the dough is finished, Rea laments that he won’t be able to truly know if it’s the same as the dough that was used to make the bread on the show, and that’s exactly when Maisie Williams shows up to give it a taste for herself.
Both Williams and Rae make a Direwolf Bread with the dough here, and there’s a fun Thrones reference when Rae asks Williams to “choose your Needle” when he offers up two knives to cut the wolf pattern. Unfortunately, Williams’ direwolf looks a lot more like Hotpie’s first attempt at a wolf than his second. But the effort is what counts, right? As we learned from Arya’s friend, it takes practice to get it right.
Rae does admit that Williams’ thicker wolf does taste better. It also helped to have some toppings on it, too.
“The honey butter tastes really good,” Williams said. “The bread is terrible.”
He says the first bread itself is more like Irish oat cakes, and it was described as “cereal-y” and “not very good.” But I’m sure adding some, uh, fruit or something to it might make it a decent enough breakfast bar. Thankfully, Rae then does the Binging With Babish thing where he figured out an actually tasty version of the Direwolf Bread to make for yourself.
Described as a brown butter pecan scone, he has a recipe in the episode and even shared a template for the direwolf design the finished product is shaped into.
It might even be a cool idea for your Game of Thrones watch party, once the show actually returns for its final episodes sometime in 2019.
