CBS Confirms ‘The Flash’ And ‘Supergirl’ Will Meet For A Big Crossover Episode

Ever since DC Comics television super producer Greg Berlanti announced that CBS had picked up his third series, Supergirl, for a limited-season order, rumors ran rampant about a possible network crossover. After all, Berlanti was responsible for the phenomenally successful Arrow and The Flash on The CW, both of which were already proceeding well beyond their first seasons. Corporate red tape to the contrary, how hard could it be to get all three (or at least two) of the superheroes together on the small screen?

Not that hard, it turns out, as CBS confirmed on Wednesday that The Flash himself, Barry Allen (Grant Gustin) would run over to National City for a special episode of Supergirl.

“We are so incredibly excited to announce something that we have dreamed of happening since we starting making Supergirl — The Flash and Supergirl are teaming up!” said The Flash and Supergirl executive producers Greg Berlanti and Andrew Kreisberg. “We want to thank Grant Gustin for making the time to come visit (on top of his already immense workload) and all of the folks at CBS, The CW, Warner Bros. and DC for working this out. And finally, thanks to the fans and journalists who have kept asking for this to happen. It is our pleasure and hope to create an episode worthy of everyone’s enthusiasm and support.”

No specific plot details have been revealed quite yet, but the press release did note that the crossover episode would air on Monday, March 28. That means that when Allen crosses paths with Kara Danvers (Melissa Benoist), it will be the 20th (and final) episode of Supergirl‘s limited-season run over at CBS.

Gustin, who is quite active on Instagram and Twitter, posted about the news throughout the day.

Benoist also retweeted news reports about the CBS press release. Though in a subsequent post, Gustin took the “cool crown” when he revealed the title of the episode, “World’s Finest.”

While Berlanti’s third DC Comics-based show had a stellar ratings debut, the series has since fallen on mediocre numbers. There’s a certain “wow factor” that such a cross-network event entails, and considering Supergirl‘s performance, Berlanti and Kreisberg are probably hoping Allen’s appearance will encourage CBS to renew them for a second season.
