Eric Trump Says His Dad’s Campaign Didn’t Want Paul Manafort’s Baggage, Hints It Wasn’t A Resignation

Critics of GOP presidential hopeful Donald Trump may roll their eyes at the explanation his son Eric has given for the departure of campaign chairman Paul Manafort. The way Eric seemed to phrase the exit suggests this week’s resignation may not have been a resignation-resignation, if you catch our meaning.

Eric Trump will be a guest on this weekend’s edition of Sunday Morning Futures with Maria Bartiromo and a quick little preview clip has provided Eric giving his take on Manafort’s work on the campaign. According to Eric, the problem is that Manafort had baggage and Donald Trump does not stand for distractions.

“I think my father didn’t want to be distracted by whatever things Paul was dealing with,” offered Eric in the short preview.

Although Eric did note that Manafort was “amazing” in his work, it seems like the phrasing implies that Manafort was shown the door, rather than resign the position of his own accord. (Gosh, if only there was some type of catchphrase associated with the Trump name we could think of.) Granted, this is more speculation on our part based on the tiny interview clip. The interview could feature Eric explaining that everyone begged Manafort to stay on, but we have our doubts. This particular clip sure does frame it like Donald Trump didn’t want a “distraction” and eliminated said distraction with much Trumpdom.

The baggage that Eric refers to is likely the allegations levelled at the lobbyist/consultant over documents found by Ukraine’s National Anti-Corruption Bureau. Underwhelming poll numbers couldn’t have done Manafort any favors either, although with The Donald promising to score 95 percent of the African-American vote, those overall numbers will improve. Well, unless Trump doesn’t get 95 percent of the African-American vote. At last glance he was polling at 1 percent, so that’s just 94 percent of the vote left to win over.
