Leslie Jones isn’t letting the trolls of Twitter keep her down.
Earlier this year, Jones, who starred in this year’s all-female Ghostbusters reboot, experienced first-hand how vicious the internet can be when she became the focus of racist, hate-filled tweets on social media. Led by blogger Milo Yiannopoulos and his posse of alt-right followers, the attacks started in July and continued in August when some horrible people hacked Jones’ website, sharing personal information including her driver’s license and intimate photos of the actress. Jones’ team quickly shut down her site and the comedian herself disappeared from the social media stratosphere, prompting a flood of support from her fans and famous friends.
Leslie Jones is one of the greatest people I know. Any personal attacks against her are attacks against us all. #LoveForLeslieJ @Lesdoggg

@Lesdoggg, no one deserves this—least of all someone who brings us so much joy. I'm with you. -H

What’s happened to Jones over the course of the last few months goes way beyond online bullying. She has repeatedly been targeted by anonymous groups of individuals determined to belittle her status as a successful black woman in Hollywood. Misogynists and racists exist — they have existed for a long time — and the internet gives them not only a shield with which to hide behind, but also a space to spew their hateful vitriol. What makes the attacks on Jones so alarming isn’t just the language and intent behind them but also how relentless they’ve become. Honestly, we wouldn’t blame the comedian if she never posted a single 140-character tweet again.
But Leslie Jones isn’t just one of the funniest women on the planet, she’s also a bada** warrior woman who’s not letting a few white men hiding behind their keyboards dictate how she lives her life.
After tweeting out her love for all things Golden Girls:

Jones then got down to some more serious business: her birthday plans.
So let's make my birthday week THE BOMB!! Cause I'm about to act a fool YALL!! CHEAH! #LJBDAY

It was a good try racist, misogynistic scumbags of the earth, but next time you decide to attempt to take down a powerful, funny black woman, take this piece of advice: just don’t.
