James Cameron recently said his three Avatar sequels will make you “sh*t yourself with your mouth wide open.” Now we know a little more about how he plans to deliver on that promise/threat. While accepting a rare honorary membership into the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers, Cameron spoke about his plans for continuing to push what can be technically done with film, and it’s no small talk from the guy who made huge leaps with CGI in Terminator 2 and made everydamnthing 3D for awhile thanks to Avatar.

Indiewire transcribed this surprising part of his speech:

“I’m going to push. Not only for better tools, workflow, high dynamic range (HDR) and high frame rates (HFR) — the things we are working toward. I’m still very bullish on 3D, but we need brighter projection, and ultimately I think it can happen — with no glasses. We’ll get there.”

The high frame rates may be a tough sell right now — considering how Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk turned out — but I’m definitely interested in what he has in mind for brightening the projection on 3D films and getting rid of the plastic glasses covered in the germs of a hundred third graders.

Can you just imagine all the blue cats doing it — or whatever the plot is, something about family, yadda yadda — in 3D without glasses? I’m going to have so many seizures, you guys. The future is now.
