Somebody Bit The Damn Ear Off Of A ‘Game Of Thrones’ Actor

There’s a fun irony to this story if you’ve read ahead in George R.R. Martin’s Game of Thrones books. Clive Mantle is a better known actor in Britain, where he’s was on a show called Casualty. Here in the states, we just know him as the guy who played Greatjon Umber in Game of Thrones. He is the head of the House of Umber, and was the first to declare Robb Stark the King of the North after the death of Lord Eddard Stark. Later on, in A Storm of Sword (minor spoiler) he bites half the ear off a man in an drunken altercation. end spoiler

The irony here is that yesterday, someone bit the ear off of Clive Mantle in real life.

The story is not as excited as you’d hope for a Game of Thrones actor who had his ear bitten off, but apparently, he was staying in a hotel in Newcastle City. Around 4:30 a.m., after Mantle had asked a group of rowdy people to keep it down, a 32-year-old Scottish man then attacked him, held him down, and bit off the top part of his ear. There’s no word on whether the 32-year-old man was a fan of Game of Thrones or had any knowledge of Greatjon Umber’s character. My guess is that, if he knew Umber was a seven-foot formidable warrior with one of the biggest, ugliest greatsword in Westeros, he’d have been smart enough to shut his f***ing mouth and walk away.

Fortunately for Mantle, his ear has been sewn back on. He was “shaken and shocked” by the turn of events, but he is British, so he was polite enough to note that the police, ambulance and hospital staff who assisted him were amazing.

If there is a lesson in this, perhaps it is this: If reality plays out like fiction for the other characters of Game of Thrones, there’s going to be a lot dead Brits in the coming years. Also, Sean Bean probably shouldn’t walk under sharp things.
