Tom Brady Sent The Patriots To The Super Bowl With A Touchdown March In Overtime

The matchup for Super Bowl 53 is now officially set, as the New England Patriots will face the Los Angeles Rams in Atlanta on Feb. 3.

Like the Rams in New Orleans, the Patriots were able to outlast the Chiefs in overtime for a 37-31 win in Arrowhead. The two star quarterbacks on both sides of this game put on quite the show down the stretch, as both orchestrated impressive late drives to force the overtime period.

The Patriots won the coin toss to open overtime, and because the NFL’s overtime rules are ridiculous, a touchdown drive would end the game. Tom Brady was locked in, delivering strikes over the middle to Julian Edelman and Rob Gronkowski on a number of third and long situations to set the Pats up deep in Chiefs territory.

Ultimately, it was Rex Burkhead who had the last three touches of the game for New England, plowing ahead through a worn out Chiefs defense. It culminated in a short touchdown run to make the inevitable a reality and send the Patriots back to the Super Bowl once again.

The Patriots only trailed twice in the game, including after a late Chiefs drive put them up 28-24, but Brady led masterful touchdown drives on his final two possessions to win the game, as he is wont to do. It’s unfortunate we didn’t get to see an actual overtime duel between Brady and Patrick Mahomes, because it would’ve been spectacular theater, but that’s how the NFL wants its overtime periods to work for whatever reason rather than just having them be a 10 or 15-minute period without a sudden death element like every other sport.

Brady and the Pats took down the hottest young star quarterback in the league on Sunday and will get a chance to take down the league’s other young star signal caller when they take on Jared Goff and the Rams in two weeks.
