Consoles, PCs, handhelds, Facebook, smartphones — the world of gaming is becoming increasingly confusing and fragmented, but don’t worry, we’re here to simplify things for you. Each week I’ll rattle off five games I think you might want to check out this week. Keep in mind, these articles aren’t meant to be comprehensive lists of everything coming out that week so much as a nice rounded tasting menu. So, let’s get to it…
This Week’s Telltale Episode
The Wolf Among Us: Episode 4 – In Sheep’s Clothing (PC, Xbox 360 & PS3, May 27th)
Yup, another new Telltale episode already — they finally seem to have their schedule nailed down. This is the penultimate episode of The Wolf Among Us, so expect some twists, turns and major revelations!
This Week’s JRPG
Mind Zero (PS Vita, May 27th)
Just can’t wait for the next Persona game? Well, Mind Zero might just tide you over. Like Persona, Mind Zero is split between visual novel sections that take place in a “real world” Tokyo, and dungeon hacking in a crazy demon-filled spiritual realm. Really, it’s kind of a brazen rip-off, but it looks pretty solid.
This Week’s Horror Game
Among the Sleep (PC, Mac & Linux, May 29th)
Want to play a horror game that will bring back the terror of being a little kid afraid of the dark? Well, then Among the Sleep is the game for you! Played from the perspective of a helpless two-year-old, Among the Sleep looks harrowing as s–t and I can’t wait to start my toddle through hell.
This Week’s Kart Racer
Mario Kart 8 (Wii U, May 30th)
It’s been a long wait Wii U owners, but it’s finally here! Mario Kart 8 is Nintendo’s first game that really seems to take advantage of the Wii U’s HD horsepower — it looks great, it moves fast, and new anti-gravity karts add a whole new mind-bending element. Oh, and by the way, you get a free game with Mario Kart 8, so if you’ve been on the fence about the Wii U for a while, now’s really the time to take the plunge.
Pick of the Week
Watch Dogs (PC, Xbox 360, Xbox One, PS3 & PS4, May 20th)
Watch Dogs may be the most, uh, thoroughly promoted game of all time. Since being unveiled at E3 2012 the hype train has rarely slowed down, but it seems like Ubisoft may actually deliver on their two years of big talk. Sure, the game doesn’t look quite as good as it did in that E3 2012 demo, and the hacking stuff is maybe slightly less mind-blowing than it was initially promised to be, but Watch Dogs looks like it’s going to be a damn solid new GTA-like open world romp with some pretty innovative multiplayer modes. I’m certainly ready to get my hack on.
Talk about a packed week! Any games you’re itching to get your hands on that I failed to mention? Hit the comments and let the world know.
