THE ADULT FILM MINUTE: Once per month, except for occasionally when it’s twice, Dr. Chauntelle Tibbals will be telling us a little bit about what’s going on in adult entertainment and why it should matter to you.
I recently got some PR text that read (in part) like this:
“Penned by a FemDomme [Soma Snakeoil], a rock star [Fat Mike], and a Tony Award winner [Jeff Marx from Avenue Q], HOME STREET HOME is a raucously entertaining new musical dark comedy. The diverse group sings and dances their way through a celebratory exploration of sex work, drug use, pain, and BDSM power exchange.”
Oh, how not Fifty Shades! Plus, Fat Mike from NOFX!
Further synopsis tells us about Sue, a teenage runaway who gets be-familied by a saucy tribe of castaway street punks. Apparently, in addition to learning about a universal human truth (“We all want to belong…”), we also must “get ready to be hogtied and face-slapped by a steamy and colorful rock musical.”
I know I should be excited about the Soma Snakeoil aspect of this production, and I am. Soma is a strong member of the adult entertainment community and an AVN Award Winner (her film Rubber Bordello won Best BDSM Release in 2013 – link NSFW). Plus, I read that her parents were professional writers AND missionaries who spent the ’80s smuggling Christian films and literature into Eastern Bloc countries (presumably, what I read said “East Block”). Regardless of your stance on Christianity and missionary work, that’s pretty darn punk rock, but I’d be lying if I didn’t confess that the Fat Mike part of this story is what got me most excited.
You see, I spent a considerable portion of my undergrad years hanging out with this guy Lee from Hesperia (read: The High Desert, Calif.). Lee was the epitome of a ’90s punk in the best possible way, and to me, NOFX et al just sounds like UCLA, which: nostalgia.
Anyway, given my history of ’90s-ness, I got all happy about Home Street Home. Plus, you can stream the production’s entire soundtrack here. One song is titled “Seeping Beauty” – come on! – and contributors include members of the Descendents, Lagwagon, Dropkick Murphys, Dance Hall Crashers, and No Use for a Name, among others (someone from Alkaline Trio?). The songs are pop-punk cheer crossed with musical theatre, which really just amounts to fun.
I’m seriously thinking of traveling to San Francisco just to watch this show.
Eleven total performances of Home Street Home are happening between February 20 and March 7 at Z Space (450 Florida St.) in San Francisco. You should go. Maybe it will be awesome?
