From ‘It: Chapter Two’ To ‘Harley Quinn’: The San Diego Comic-Con Trailers, Ranked

Warner Bros.

This year’s San Diego Comic-Con is coming to close, which means that there’s now a feature film’s worth of new trailers, clips and featurettes for upcoming movies and television shows to consider. Many of these, like the first full-length trailer for It: Chapter Two and the surprise teaser for Tom Cruise’s Top Gun: Maverick, have already been covered by Uproxx. Many others have not. So, to make things a little easier for everyone, here’s a brief ranking of the top 10 trailers (and one bonus) to come out of the 2019 Comic-Con.

10. Rick and Morty

Technically, this first entry isn’t a trailer, but who cares? Fans of Rick and Morty have been waiting for the fourth season for years, and thanks to Comic-Con, they’ve finally been granted access to the first images and a clip of things to come. In the latter, an alien named Glootie (who’s voiced by none other than Taika Waititi) is being harangued by Jerry and Morty about shutting down a mysterious app. When smashing the computers doesn’t do the trick, Glootie sarcastically responds, “That’s not how apps work.” November can’t come soon enough.

9. Untitled The Walking Dead Movie

A lot of Walking Dead news came out of this weekend’s Comic-Con. Creator Robert Kirkman teased the possibility of a Negan spinoff in the comics, Fear the Walking Dead was renewed for a sixth season, and Danai Gurira confirmed that The Walking Dead‘s upcoming 10th season would be her last. But the biggest thing to drop regarding the massive franchise was the first teaser trailer for the upcoming untitled Walking Dead movie that’s all about Andrew Lincoln’s Rick Grimes. A precise release date wasn’t given, but AMC did confirm that the movie would be “only in theaters.”

8. The Expanse

After three seasons on Syfy, the sprawling science fiction series The Expanse was canceled. Its cancellation didn’t last long, however, as Amazon subsequently swooped in and saved it for a fourth season (and possibly more). Just over a year later, the first teaser trailer for the show’s new season, which sees the crew of the Rocinante and the Game of Thrones-esque series’ many, many other characters (along with a few new additions) exploring and fighting over “New Terra,” one of the many new worlds now within reach thanks to the mysterious alien gate.

7. Jay and Silent Bob Reboot

Well, what else is there to say? All that seems appropriate now is to exclaim “bong,” as the first trailer for the long-awaited Jay and Silent Bob Reboot is here. Writer, director and star Kevin Smith has been teasing this followup to 2001’s Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back for years, and now it’s finally (almost) here. This time around, the pair discovers that Hollywood is rebooting the Bluntman and Chronic comic book characters based on them, so they decide to try and put a stop to it. And yes… even Ben Affleck is back.

6. Star Trek: Picard

We’ve been excited about the standalone Star Trek series about Jean-Luc Picard ever since it was first confirmed by Sir Patrick Stewart himself. Now, after a short teaser and a John Wick-esque image of Picard and a dog named “Number One,” the first full trailer for the CBS All Access show is here. It still doesn’t give too much away, but one thing is clear — Picard has tried to stay retired for several decades now, but feels compelled to return to action when a mysterious young woman seeks him out. Also, Data, Voyager‘s Seven of Nine and the Borg are all making appearances.

5. The Witcher

Two years ago, Netflix announced that a fantasy series adapted from The Witcher books — which also served as the inspiration for the popular video games of the same name — was in the works. Soon after, Henry Cavill’s casting as the white-haired Geralt of Rivia was announced, and ever since then, just about every piece of promotional media has focused on his Legolas-ish appearance. As of Friday, however, audiences now have a first teaser trailer to chew on, and it looks equally fantastic and horrifying.

4. Watchmen

The advertising campaign for Damon Lindelof Watchmen series on HBO has consisted of a remarkably slow burn. With Saturday’s Comic-Con trailer, however, many questions about the loose adaptation of Alan Moore’s acclaimed graphic novel have been answered. Namely, just as Lindelof, actor Don Johnson and others have repeatedly said, this Watchmen isn’t going to repeat what Zack Snyder’s uber-faithful 2009 film did. Instead, it’s more of an inspired look at what transpired after the story Moore put forward in the original comic book series.

3. Top Gun: Maverick

Tom Cruise surprised the Hall H crowd on Thursday with the first teaser trailer for Top Gun: Maverick, the sequel to the original film that came out over 30 years ago. Yes, according to the new teaser, the movie is going to be rife with nostalgia, a conceptual element that has dominated much of Hollywood storytelling in the past decade. (See: Fuller House, Roseanne, Stranger Things, etc.) But as Uproxx’s Mike Ryan notes, this film very well may be a soulful and serious meditation on Cruise’s career via its title character.

2. Harley Quinn

All eyes are on Margot Robbie’s interpretation of the DC Comics villain Harley Quinn in the character’s upcoming Suicide Squad spinoff film Birds of Prey. However, this isn’t the only version of the character to exist in media other than comics at the moment. There’s also the highly-anticipated DC Universe animated series Harley Quinn, which stars The Big Bang Theory alum Kaley Cuoco in the title role. A “first look” trailer for the incredibly violent, raunchy and funny cartoon dropped on Saturday and… well… it looks awesome!

1. IT: Chapter Two

Clowns are horrifying. Killer clowns from outer space are even scarier. Yet everyone can’t seem to get enough of Bill Skarsgård’s Pennywise in It: Chapter One, which dominated the box office in 2017. He’ll be doing it again in the forthcoming sequel, It: Chapter Two, which sees the “Losers Club” members, all of whom are now adults, returning to the haunting town of Derry, Maine to face off with the horrifying menace once more. The first full trailer for the movie dropped on Comic-Con’s first day and pretty much won everything.

BONUS: Cats

The first teaser trailer for Tom Hooper’s film adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Weber’s musical Cats wasn’t specifically released at Comic-Con. Regardless, the mind-boggling display of “digital fur technology” has dominated Comic-Con adjacent conversations ever since late Thursday. The nearly two and a half-minute preview of Idris Elba, Taylor Swift and James Corden “donning” full-body catsuits and singing about cat things will ruin your eyeballs and turn your brain into a pile of mush. It’s awesome. It’s also awful.
