Comics Of Note, Ranked, For July 8

Once again, we’re here to rank this week’s comics, with everything from the return of Rob Liefeld to a Black Superman crashing in 1920s Mississippi. So, what took No. 1?

As a reminder, these are ranked on accessibility, quality, and, of course, your critic’s overall educated opinion. A lowly ranked book might be perfectly fine, but just might be less accessible to new readers. With that in mind, our No. 1!

1) Strange Fruit #1

Mark Waid and J.G. Jones aren’t beating around the bush with this one; Superman has just crash-landed in 1920s Mississippi, he’s a 6-foot black man, and he’s not taking sh*t from anybody. But what makes it work is that nobody, aside from a handful of minor idiot Klansmen, is a complete cartoon character of a villain; they’re definitely bad people, but they’re bad people with texture and complexity that make them interesting as well as hissable.

Oh, and J.G. Jones is on art, so it’s beautiful. This book is the whole package; make a point of picking it up.

2) Archie #1

Archie as a company has made some pretty bold moves, lately, but this might be their riskiest yet; taking a shot at reinventing their classic romantic teen comedy staple, and bringing in Mark Waid and Fiona Staples to do it. And the heck of it is… it works. Waid’s story is a gentle, funny story about a break-up, and the things your friends do to try and help you out, and Staples handles the tough job of reinventing some iconic characters in comics with skill. In short, it’s the most surprising must-read of the year.

3) Harrow County #3

Cullen Bunn and Tyler Crook’s horror tale/fairy story follows up two knockout issues with a third that’s just as great. Emmy is slowly realizing the power she has, but she’s just a teenage girl. And, unlike the witch she might be the reincarnation of, Emmy wants to do the right thing. Unfortunately, the haints in the woods aren’t quite so inclined. A superb book, unlike anything else on the stands right now, and a must-read.

4) Constantine: The Hellblazer #2

Ming Doyle and James Tynion IV really bring Constantine back to his Vertigo roots in this series. It’s a little surprising, but welcome. As Constantine hunts a ghost killer, we get to see the mournful side of this bastard magician. If you’ve missed the old, nasty John, this is the book to pick up.

5) Negative Space #1

Guy is sensitive. Guy is a profound writer. Guy is trying to write his suicide note, and a vaguely menacing corporation/alien conspiracy/herd of douchebags would very much like Guy, one of the most powerful empaths in the world, to write something they can weaponize before he bumps himself off. Unfortunately for them, things are about to get very, very weird.

Ryan K. Lindsay and Owen Gieni have a very off-kilter premise here, but it works thanks to the large, sad man at its center. All sorts of weird things are unfolding around Guy without his knowledge, although he begins to get a glimmer rather quickly, but the book is focused on the small moments; little crushes, the love of a good movie, all the little human things we experience every day. Guy’s not overdramatically sad, he’s just not sure what he has to live for. And the way the book ends, it looks like he’s about to find something.

6) Lantern City #3

This story of a steampunk society started intelligently with a hero who has plenty to lose has been slowly upping the stakes. Sander is quickly discovering the guards are not quite the faceless goons he’s taken them for… and that he’s more ruthless than he realized. It’s becoming a compelling, intelligent thriller and if you’re not picking it up already, give it a look.

7) Star Wars: Lando #1

Before the cloud city, before the day job, Lando was a con man. And that’s what this comic is all about, Lando pulling off the heist of his life… but he should have checked just who he was robbing. I’ll leave that to you to read, but suffice to say, it’s a wonderful moment. If you’re a Star Wars fan — even just a casual one — pick this up.

8) Unity #20

The structure of this book is really what makes it: Instead of introducing the Warmonger in a big fight, we see the story from her perspective as she hunts down the individual members of Unity, and reminisces about run-ins she’s had with previous versions of the team. It’s a clever way to introduce somebody who could be a goofy supervillain, but it makes her both a genuine threat and oddly gives the book a lot of comic relief, since she’s a foul-mouthed smart-ass. Really well done, and a great read.

9) Star Trek/Green Lantern #1

Leaving aside IDW’s ridiculous number of variant covers (seriously, they have more variant covers than actual pages), this crossover actually manages to mix and match two somewhat different franchises with enormously entertaining results. An alternate reality Ganthet escapes to the Star Trek universe… and brings a bunch of rings with him. Unfortunately, he dies soon after and… well, yeah, you can put together where the plot goes from there. It’s a hoot, to say the least, and if you’re a fan of either, it’s worth picking up.

10) The Fox #4

Dean Haspiel simultaneously goes psychedelic with the art while razzing the Fox’s sometimes poorly conceived rogue’s gallery in this latest issue, arguably the best of a strong series so far. It’s just lighthearted enough to sell the stakes and it’s a breezy, fun dose of superheroics. Grab it if you need some action with some levity mixed in.

11) Gotham Academy #8

Olive is back, and Kyle wants to rekindle their relationship. Olive has secrets, though, and Kyle might not like what he uncovers. This issue, kicking things back into high gear after last month’s entertaining breather issue, is a great jumping-on point for what’s been a book that’s grown on me surprisingly quickly. It’s an engaging comic and definitely worth a shot if you haven’t already tried it.

12) Rebels #4

Seth Abbott continues his journey through the Revolutionary War, this time hauling up to Ticonderoga to bring cannon to Washington. If you know your American history, you already know what Abbott’s in for; if not, well, suffice to say it’s more work than you might think. But Seth himself is the focus here, as his relationship with his wife starts to fall apart. It’s an interesting, and human, take on one of the most heavily mythologized times in American history, and well worth following.

13) Red Hood/Arsenal #2

From a rather generic start, Scott Lobdell has decided to imbue this book with a snotty sense of humor. You know what, though? It works, not least due to Paolo Pantalena being able to balance superheroics with goofy splash pages of satire. It’s not subtle, but it’s a hoot, and that’s enough to make it worth a look.

14) Bloodshot Reborn #4

This book has always been grim, but this might mark the first time it feels a bit too much. Part of it is that the book has a formula it’s settled into; Ray yells at his hallucinations, Ray finds a Bloodshot-infected, Ray feels bad about committing horrible acts of violence. Hopefully the next few issues shake things up; it appears the impish Bloodsquirt, easily the funniest creation Jeff Lemire has brought to the book, will be the focus of the next issue.

15) JLU #11

The JLU starts recruiting new members for specific missions… under false pretenses, and with more danger than the recruits quite realize. Jeff Parker’s new take on the team book is an oddball one, but it’s a good way to shake this book up and help DC’s characters with more of a cult fanbase stand out. Definitely worth a read, for the concept if nothing else.

16) 21st Century Tank Girl #2

After a dreary first issue, this second one manages to turn it around. The strips are more focused, the gags land, and the art is still top notch. Granted, this is still going to be more for fans of the absurdist anti-heroine than anyone else, but it’s a fun, silly read.

17) Catwoman #42

Despite the cover, the focus is still squarely on Selina Kyle, mob queen. I like the idea of the book, but it could stand to set aside the slow burn now and again. At least let Selina crack the whip once in a while.

18) Batman/Superman #22

Superman’s depowered and his secret identity is public knowledge. Batman is Jim Gordon in power armor. Together, they’re… well, “together” is probably the wrong word. Neither of them trusts the other, neither of them likes the other, and they’re going to have to settle their differences quickly if they’re going to keep Gotham in one piece.

To be honest this struggles a bit not least because it’s in the shadow of Pak’s very interesting run on Action right now, and Pak does a better job characterizing Clark than he does characterizing Jim Gordon, who comes off as a little flat and reactionary here. If they can get some depth to Gordon, it’ll be a good take on the superhero team-up.

19) Big Man Plans #4

This is Eric Powell in full-on gore mode… which is a little disappointing, truth be told. This book started out with a great concept but really needed a stronger finish. Hopefully this isn’t the last we’ve seen of one very, very pissed off little person.

20) Batman #42

Jim Gordon is still getting used to being Batman, but, hey, at least he’s got support staff. That said, this could stand to do more with Bat-Commish; aside from a few conversations, this is really just a typical Bat-story. Fun, and Greg Capullo’s art is always a selling point, especially with a wry little tribute to Frank Miller in one panel, but Scott Snyder needs to take the story to the next level.

21) Mad Max: Fury Road: Max #1

This issue is mostly setup, explaining why Max winds up out in the desert with his Interceptor. It’s not terrible, but it doesn’t really add much to the proceedings either. Worth picking up if you’re a fan of the movie.

22) JLA #2

This book has gone from a random ambush on our heroes to Superman turning into an evangelical for Rao, basically Krypton’s version of Yahweh. And it continues to be a complete mess, writing-wise; Bryan Hitch has gorgeous pencils and a great inking team in Daniel Henriques and Andrew Currie backing him up, but the story makes not a lick of sense and relies way too heavily on our heroes being dumb as bricks. Pretty to look at… just ignore the words.

23) Starfire #2

This book can’t quite balance the goofy ditz jokes with the fairly serious natural disaster that anchors the plot, so it feels a bit disjointed. Still, it’s an engaging enough read, and fans will likely enjoy seeing Kori deal with windspeeds.

24) Earth 2: Society #2

This is an okay book, one supposes, although I feel bad for anybody who hasn’t been at least cursorily following Daniel H. Wilson’s Earth 2 run and its alternate heroes. And it has some good ideas, but there’s a lot for new readers to cut through to get to the good stuff. Really for hardcore DC fans who enjoy alternate interpretations of their heroes.

25) The Tomorrows #1

This book wants to be a punk rock anthem so hard it hurts, but it can’t even find a second note to its melody. It’s about a team of “artistic terrorists” fighting a corporation run by a debauched sadist building a mind control devi-why am I even finishing this sentence? You know exactly how this book plays out. You’ll know everything that happens when you look at the first page.

Mostly what it brings to the table is a tiresome smugness. It’s full of lines like “I was the Lichtenstein to her Russ Heath”, and it literally ends with the most unearned mic drop since that became a thing. It’s really not helped by Jason Copland, who’s quite a capable artist, either being forced to or voluntarily referencing Akira and/or Blade Runner every third page. Maybe there’s more to it, later on, but right now, it’s a pretty tired cover song.

26) All-Star Section Eight #2

Garth Ennis’ return to his joke heroes stumbles pretty hard in its second issue. Part of it is just that the jokes don’t really click; Six-Pack arguing with a t-shirt vendor and a pervert spying on an animate pile of guts are pretty much the jokes here, and it’s not even that they don’t land, you’re not even sure why you’re supposed to find them funny.

27) Bloodstrike #1

God help me, I am not sure if Rob Liefeld thinks he’s making fun of himself, or if he genuinely thought making Bloodstrike’s stolen penis the central plot device of this relaunch was edgy. Or something. There’s also a scene where two naked women are eaten alive by Bloodwulf, because that’s not incredibly tasteless and off-putting or anything. Either way, it doesn’t work.

But Liefeld can now draw feet! That counts for something! Right?
