When the Dallas Cowboys drafted Ezekiel Elliott fourth overall, it was foreboding for Darren McFadden. Suddenly, he was competing with a player the Cowboys had invested a lot in for touches, with Alfred Morris also in the mix. Now, McFadden has suffered an injury that will further hurt his stock with the Cowboys and, to add insult to literal injury, it evidently happened in what is being described as a “cell phone accident.”

McFadden ended up breaking his elbow in a fall over Memorial Day weekend, an injury that stemmed from McFadden’s attempt to keep from dropping his cell phone. It will now be added to the list of weird, fluke injuries that athletes have suffered over the years, falling somewhere between Clint Barmes lugging deer meat around and breaking his collarbone and Marty Cordova burning himself after falling asleep in a tanning bed. Initially, McFadden kept the injury under wraps, but then an X-ray revealed his elbow as fractured, and he opted for surgery.
The surgery will keep McFadden out for a couple of months, based on initial reports. That would allow McFadden time to return before the season opener in September, but he will miss at least part of training camp, and it certainly won’t help his chances of cracking the starting depth chart. This serves as a harsh reminder that, as hazardous as football is, danger could potentially be lurking around any corner, even in your own home. Sleep tight, folks.
