It’s been years since MTV Unplugged was a thing, but that’s not stopped artists of all genres from getting into the acoustic spirit. The latest is Jack White, he of The White Stripes, The Raconteurs and The Dead Weather. White swung by The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Friday night to help promote his foray into acoustic tunes, the record Acoustic Recordings: 1998-2016, which was released that same day.
White took to the stage and played a little medley on his Army Navy Gibson, which he later told Fallon was built for use during the first World War, and is displayed on the album’s cover. The songs he chose for the medley were “Love is the Truth,” a tune commissioned by Coca-Cola for a 2006 TV ad, and “You’ve Got Her In Your Pocket,” which was originally released on 2003’s Elephant.
Acoustic Recordings collects previously released tracks by The White Stripes, unreleased tunes, B-sides and alternate mixes. There are 26 tracks on the record, featuring everything from “Hotel Yorba” to a cover of Buddy Holly’s “Peggy Sue.
White also managed to get in a little dig at Fallon’s expense during his appearance. When the host tells White that he plays a Fender Newport guitar from time to time on the show, White responds that Fallon’s instrument of choice is “a beginners’ guitar for children.” Nice one, Jack.
