Free Online ‘Super Mario Bros. Crossover’ Game Now Brings Japan-Only Mario Game To America

Super Mario Bros. Crossover started out as a flash-based emulation which let you play Super Mario Bros. online as different characters. The non-profit fan game then expanded into an even bigger version with more characters and features. Now version three of Super Mario Bros. Crossover is free to play online (trailer below), and they’ve added every level from Super Mario Bros. Special, bringing the total number of levels to 192. There goes our weekend.

SMB Special was a Japan-only game for the NEC-PC8801 and Sharp X1. It was released in 1986, before The Lost Levels. The game was too slow, but Super Mario Bros. Crossover has emulated every level without the lag. They also brought over the special items, like the hammer from Donkey Kong and the Wing (which makes you able to “swim” in midair).

The new levels still let you choose easy, normal, or hard modes and pick a character for each level. The characters include the original Mario and Luigi, plus Link from Legend of Zelda, Samus Aran from Metroid, Simon Belmont from Castlevania, Bill Rizer from Contra, Bass and Mega Man from Mega Man, Ryu Hayabusa from Ninja Gaiden, and SOPHIA III from Blaster Master. I’ve already played so much of this game as Simon Belmont. Taste my whip, Goomba bastards.

SHUT UP AND TAKE MY NO MONEY ‘CAUSE IT’S A FREE GAME.

One final note: Jay Pavlina and team are also seeking donations toward making an original game, Super Retro Squad, which will be SNES-style with 4-player online multiplayer.
