Audiences don’t normally associate director Harmony Korine (“Gummo,” “Julien Donkey Boy,” “Trash Humpers”) with fun in the sun and Disney teen idols.
However, his latest film, the sleazy satire “Spring Breakers,” features a bevy of beautiful young starlets — including Selena Gomez, Vanessa Hudgens and Ashley Benson — as spring breakers who go from having a debaucherous good time in Florida to hanging out with a scummy drug dealer named Alien (a cornrowed James Franco) and getting up to no good.
While at the Toronto Film Festival for the upcoming animated film “Hotel Transylvania,” the former Disney star sat down with HitFix’s Gregory Ellwood to discuss the film’s soon-to-be-infamous raunch factor, including scenes where the formally squeaky clean Gomez strips down, smokes pot and hangs out with murderers.
Some of her longtime fans may be surprised to see her drinking, getting high, getting naked and generally being a bad girl in “Spring Breakers.” While Gomez states that she does “everything for my fans,” she also notes, “It’s not for everybody.”
Gomez states that the film is “for sure” rated R, but it seems tentative, given the alleged amount of nudity and violence (she even jokes about it “pushing NC-17). So maybe leave the Disney kids at home when the film hits theaters.
“Spring Breakers” is scheduled to open March 5, 2013.
