Once the “Twilight” film franchise has wrapped up (“Breaking Dawn, Part II” opens this weekend), author Stephenie Meyer will try to lure hordes of young fans back to the multiplexes with her upcoming sci-fi/romance “The Host.” The brand new new trailer gives you a look at things to come.
In “The Host,” Earth has been invaded by an invisible enemy who use unsuspecting humans as “hosts,” in a spin on the “Invasion of the Body Snatchers” formula. When two attractive young survivors meet, they naturally fall in love, only to have that union threatened when the parasites move in. Saoirse Ronan (“Hanna”) and Max Irons “Red Riding Hood”) play the young lovers, who are among the very last humans left on the planet.
“The Host” was adapted and directed by Andrew Niccol, who has dealt with futuristic crises of identity before, notably in “Gattaca” and “S1mone.” He recently directed the MTV-frienldy sci-fi thriller “in Time,” starring Justin Timberlake and Amanda Seyfried.
While the romantic elements in “The Host” seem to be less at the forefront than in the “Twilight Saga,” the tone and the look appear to be very familiar and die hard “Twilight” fans may still turn out in droves, based on the author’s name alone.
Diane Kruger, William Hurt and Jake Abel also star.
“The Host” opens March 29, 2013.
