We love the work of Gallery 1988. They give us numerous opportunities to post funny pictures of artworks based on the movies, TV shows, and music we loved growing up, and we get to pretend to be erudite connoisseurs of the arts (pronounced ahhht just to punctuate how super-fancy we are). For six years now, Gallery 1988 has hosted the annual Crazy 4 Cult show, which features artworks based on cult movies.
Initially created with the help of Kevin Smith, the art show has grown by leaps and bounds each year featuring art from almost every single cult movie imaginable. There’s a book commemorating its awesomeness, countless imitators from coast to coast, but the event was always relegated to Los Angeles. No more. This week, Gallery 1988 moves east for the sixth annual iteration of its pop culture art show, Crazy 4 Cult New York. [/film]
This year’s Crazy 4 Cult features works from over 200 artists expressing their love for The Big Lebowski, The Princess Bride, The Goonies, Shaun Of The Dead, Monty Python And The Holy Grail, Back To The Future, and a wide variety of other movies that have achieved a cult status through our collective nostalgia.
Some of our favorites out of the 280 pictures at Gallery 1988’s Crazy 4 Cult New York are collected below. Many of these still have prints available for sale at the link below each photo. If you want to see the works in person, the show runs until September 1st at Gallery 1988’s pop-up store in New York City at 64 Gansevoort Street in the Meatpacking District. This is the first and last time you’ll see me typing “pop-up” and “meatpacking” in such a tame context.
