GLAAD’s Media Award Nominees Include Everything From ‘Carol’ To ‘NCIS’

This morning, GLAAD announced the nominations for its 2016 Media Awards, which are bestowed annually to films, TV shows, music, and journalism that provide “fair, accurate and inclusive representations of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community and the issues that affect their lives.” Some of the nominations could’ve been seen from a mile away: Carol, The Danish Girl, Freeheld, Dope, and Grandma, all of which boast one or two LGBTQ central characters, are nominated for Outstanding Film — Wide Release; Grace and Frankie, Orange Is the New Black, and Transparent are among the Outstanding Comedy Series noms; and Sense8, The Fosters, and Orphan Black are nominated for Best Drama Series.

But there are some surprises here, as well. The Outstanding Film — Limited Release category includes small, transgender-actress-starring indies like Sean Baker’s Tangerine and Eric Schaeffer’s Boy Meets Girl, both of which were critically lauded, but otherwise ignored by the big awards ceremonies. NCIS: New Orleans is nominated for an episode entitled “Rock-a-Bye-Baby,” which a Christian Post recap informs me follows a gay navy commander whose daughter is kidnapped by a Chinese government spy? Also, Normal NCIS, sans extra city qualifier, is nominated for “We Build, We Fight,” which the NCIS wiki explains is about another gay navy lieutenant, but this time, one who gets murdered. Very much looking forward to NCIS: Gay Navy Commander.
