After 33 years on the air, David Letterman said goodbye last night in his final episode as host of The Late Show. Letterman changed the late night talk show game when he arrived at NBCÂ in 1982 and debuted Late Night with David Letterman. After Johnny Carson retired, the man made the move from NBC to CBS and continued delivering his brand of late night talk show entertainment.
Letterman’s influence throughout the comedy world is huge and can be felt in other late night personalities like Jimmy Kimmel and Conan O’Brien. The 68-year-old made his retirement a reality last night as stars like Bill Murray, Tina Fey, Chris Rock, and Jerry Seinfeld appeared on the show to give him a proper send off. To add the icing to the proverbial cake, Foo Fighters closed out the show with a performance of “Everlong” set to a montage of David Letterman’s best clips.
Stephen Colbert definitely has big shoes to fill but something tells me he’ll do just fine when he takes over hosting duties of The Late Show in the fall.
