Everything You Need To Know From The ‘Star Wars’ Panel At Comic-Con 2015

The Star Wars panel from Comic-Con 2015 was a fan’s dream come true, featuring the entire cast, a look at some of the PRACTICAL effects we will see this fall when the film hits theaters, and the appearance of the trio above together on one stage. There were freakouts.

The first and most important bit to see is the behind the scene featurette shown to the folks in attendance, detailing the filming techniques and giving us a good look at some of the film’s characters in full wardrobe. There’s even a bit of Simon Pegg in there for you Shaun of the Dead fans:

It’s full of so many cool little bits and pieces, including our first look at Carrie Fisher in costume as Leia:

And Han Solo himself sitting down behind the controls of the Millennium Falcon:

There will be a nice selection of shots from the video at the bottom of the post, but there’s plenty more from the actual panel that needs to be discussed. That includes Harrison Ford’s first appearance since his airplane crash that put him in the hospital:

Folks were clearly excited for the guy and he even cracked a smile.

On the stage we got various different little tidbits, including the news from J.J. Abrams that a rough cut of the film is complete and they’re editing it at the moment with preparations to show John Williams a cut. Then they brought Baba Joe out on the stage to show off a bit of the practical effects being touted in the behind the scenes video above:

Abrams was joined by Lawrence Kasdan and Kathleen Kennedy (and I should add that Chris Hardwick was doing the moderating), with both noting that working on the film was “a gas.” Kasdan’s influence on the original films makes him a welcome sight on the current slate, particularly when it comes to dialogue. They then showcased a few more behind the scenes looks at the effects:

At the end of this segment, it was announced that Gareth Edwards will start shooting Rogue One in three weeks. That means all of this is actually happening and we are set on having Star Wars for the next half decade or more in movie theaters. It’s the pinnacle of this geek wave we’ve been seeing. We also got confirmation that the next trailer will hit in the fall before leading into the video from above. But no word on Colin Trevorrow directing the next installment of the series.

The entire thing seemed like a blast for everyone, including the actors, the minds behind creating the film, and, most importantly, the fans. Oscar Isaac, John Boyega, and Daisy Ridley all came out on stage together, soon joined by the classic trio and several of the villains, including Gwendoline Christie as Captain Phasma, Domnhall Gleeson as General Hux, and Adam Driver as Kylo Ren.

Boyega and Ridley also had a lot of fun traversing the Comic-Con floor together, showing off with fans and posing for photos with the Star Wars memorabilia on site:

But at the end, it’s all about the three that started the entire thing off. The Verge called Hamill disheveled, but I think he’s just enjoying his time with the beard look. Why not? He even drops a zinger about going into exile due to finding out the woman he had the hots for in the first trilogy was his sister. That’s a moment.

Ford provided the proper quote on the return experience, which is fitting since he’s probably the one who was least likely to enjoy it. From The Verge:

“I never thought it would come back to bless me instead of haunt me. … I was very gratified when I read the script, because I read something that I thought was really remarkable. Well written, with some intriguing developments. So I was delighted to be involved.”

To close the panel out, everybody in attendance was led to a special Star Wars concert and given a lanyard to get them into the event:

And that’s that. It wasn’t as groundbreaking as the Star Wars Celebration, but it did provide a look at the care being put into this film. It looks great and only God can help them if it turns out that this film is terrible. But just judging from what we’ve seen, things looks promising.
