A few weeks ago, Hulk Hogan‘s daughter, Brooke, attempted to defend her dad against cries of racism. These claims were not unwarranted after the release of a sex tape, in which Hogan said “n*gger” several times. The conversation in question wasn’t simply racist, it was kind of creepy. While Hulk was still in the midst of sexy times, he reportedly referred to his own daughter’s interracial relationship with a black man. The incident was gross in several ways, and Hulk ended up losing his position in WWE.
In the ongoing aftermath of this scandal, The Rock distanced himself while Dennis Rodman offered support to Hulk, saying, “There isn’t a racist bone in that man’s body.” Brooke also defended pops with a strange poem that left many people befuddled. Brooke decided to open up again about her father. She spoke with Entertainment Tonight to clear things up:
“He’s an easy target. It’s not that my dad thinks that, and that’s not how we were raised. My dad’s best friends with Mr. T, he’s best friends with Dennis Rodman, he’s not racist. It’s just when you’re mad and you’re at the lowest point in your life …. you just choose ill-fitting words for that situation just to air your shorts out. He’s so nice to everybody.”
Brooke continued, saying it was okay if people called her “honkey,” so black people shouldn’t be offended by the n-word:
“I feel bad for my dad, but I also feel bad for the African-American fans and stuff because they don’t know that he didn’t mean it. You know, it would be offensive. But this is something that we have to put a stop to everyday, because I’ll be honest with you, I’ve had a black guy call me a honkey, and I’ve also been told that white people smell like bologna. I don’t take offense to it, I just laughed at it.”
Brooke doesn’t appear to care about the cultural implications of the n-word, nor does she have awareness of how much privilege she possesses while declaring that “honkey” and “n*gger” hold the same level of offensiveness. She simply cares about her father, who “doesn’t want anyone to think that of him because it’s not who he really is.” Brooke says Hulk “understands” and “takes responsibility for it.” She must not know that Hulk still inexplicably wants to say the n-word without consequence.
