Have you been in a haggard clump worrying that high ranking studio execs might not be able to make ends meet this year? Don’t worry, the film industry had boffo box office in 2015. How boffo? The boffoist year ever, declares a new report from Deadline.
Riding the colossal financial gains of Star Wars: The Force Awakens across the finish line, 2015 is projected to close with the biggest overall North American box office total in history at a whopping $11.1 billion. (If memory serves, about $24 of that revenue bundle is from Jem and the Holograms‘ fall take.) This year’s insane continental movie money haul eclipses the previous record of $10,919,694,802 set in 2013.
In addition to the public’s mass dorking out over the latest Star Wars offering, 2015’s record-breaking total got a major boost from smashes like Furious 7, Avengers: Age of Ultron, and Jurassic World. Blockbusters do a lot of the box office heavy lifting. According to Variety‘s numbers, this year’s Top 10 grossed more than $3.6 billion when you nestle them together.
The robust numbers are obviously a welcome sight for the film industry and an improvement over what 2014 had in store. Compared to last year’s total (a paltry $10,356,099,042), 2015 enjoyed a 7.2 percent bump in its year-end box office haul. Let’s take a live look in at how Hollywood is reacting to this news.
Good to know.
