Turns out, if you have a top secret, under wraps, you may not want to enlist Republic Records’ executive Wendy Goldstein to keep it for you. In a recent “Hitmakers Roundtable” hosted by Billboard, industry leaders and influencers were called on to discuss the current climate of mainstream pop music.
Bringing in prominent names within modern music from “I Took a Pill in Ibiza” artist, Mike Posner to the CEO of Artist Partners Group, Mike Karen, the most revealing insight spawned from the interview was one by that of Ms. Goldstein. At 2 minutes and 39 seconds into the video, the VP and head of urban A&R lets it slip that a Daft Punk/The Weeknd collaboration is in the works.
When prompted with the question of what artist she’d soon like to work with, Goldstein admitted, “Well actually, we have a session coming up in two days with The Weeknd and Daft Punk, and I’ve always been a massive Daft Punk fan.” The Weeknd, who is currently signed to Republic Records, thickened the plot by posting a suggestive image to Facebook the same day Billboard published the video.
In it, we see two Daft Punk robot action figures sitting atop a speaker accompanied by a couple of robot emojis.
Though neither Daft Punk’s representatives nor the electronic French duo themselves have publicly commented on Goldstein’s proclamation, here’s hoping we have concrete proof by way of a new pop anthem very, very soon.
