Back in July, we told you about Sickick, the masked Toronto DJ who opened for Drake this summer and is well on his way to stardom. Sickick was able to overcome a serious fear of crowds, and has now performed on some of the world’s biggest stages, with the future only looking brighter. For years, it looked as though Sickick’s fear of performing in public would prevent him from ever breaking through, but that all changed when he got the idea to invent the Sickick persona and perform in a mask. By performing as a character, and not revealing himself to the audience, Sickick was able to perform without revealing his most severe vulnerabilities. Now, the DJ/producer is back with an incredible new video that just might do the job of breaking him to people who haven’t caught the fever yet.
When watching the video for “Roll Thru,” it’s not hard to see why Drake chose Sickick to be one of his disciples. His emotional blend of hip-hop and R&B certainly has some origins in Drizzy’s playbook. Still, Sickick is able to separate himself from Drake and his contemporaries with the persona he creates. As we watch him walk through the rain, he reveals himself to be superhero of sorts when his mask begins to glow. He also demonstrates the power to make the earth shake, as though he were a character on Avatar: The last Airbender. Will Sickick reveal himself to be a master crimefighter sometime soon? We can only guess. For now, he’s a great talent with an incredibly bright future ahead of him.
