Nobody does intrigue quite like Jonathan Hickman, and Secret is rapidly becoming the best example of that. A full review, plus looks at this week’s #1s and other notable books from DC, Dark Horse, and IDW.
Essentially, Secret follows a private security firm as they stumble onto something ugly, much uglier than they imagined. One can’t really talk about the plot in detail because it’s so intricate that you really need to go in cold, but Hickman mixes together revels and opening up new questions as the book goes along, while simultaneously deepening the characters. The opening of the book is not what you think, at all, and it tells you a lot about how this series works.
Ryan Bodenheim, meanwhile, does a lot of interesting work with the art. Bodenheim, working with colorist Michael Garland, offers detailed art, but often very monochrome, limited colors designed to pop specific details out of the foreground or background. It’s an oddly unsettling art scheme that fits the tone of the book while avoiding the standard noirish cliches.
In short, Secret is a great book of intrigue both high and low, and it’s well worth adding to your sub list. But what about some of the other books this week?
<!–pagetitle:Batman Incorporated Special #1–>
I’m a bit of a sucker for anthology books, especially superhero anthology books, and Chris Burnham wrapping Batman Incorporated with some stories about what happens next is always welcome. Each of these stories actually does right by the ideas the book explored, even if they’re as silly as Bat-Cow. If you’ve been following the book, or just love anthologies, this is a book worth picking up.
<!–pagetitle:American Vampire Anthology #1–>
Really, when it comes to DC, this is my week. This book is packed stem to stern with great writers and artists: Franco Francavilla, Gabriel Ba & Fabio Moon, Greg Rucka, Declan Shalvey, Jeff Lemire, and of course Scott Snyder and Rafael Albuquerque. You don’t need to have read American Vampire to enjoy it, either, you just have to like horror comics. A must-buy this week.
<!–pagetitle:Itty Bitty Hellboy #1–>
Art Baltazar and Franco work their kids comics magic on Dark Horse’s premiere horror property. It is aimed squarely at kids, but it’s pretty cute, and I’d be lying if I didn’t admit the book’s jokes about Johan didn’t make me laugh. Strictly for kids, but if you buy comics for kids, worth buying.
<!–pagetitle:Station To Station–>
Corinna Bechko and Gabriel Hardman tell a fun little Lovecraftian SF story about an attempt to find alternate timelines that has gone, as you may have guessed, horribly wrong. Hardman in particular has a lot of fun with the art, keeping it realistic even when giant floating tentacle beasties are in the frame. It’s a nice little one-and-done story worth picking up if you haven’t already read it in Dark Horse Presents.
<!–pagetitle:Overtaken #1–>
Frank Mastromauro writes a science fiction tale that’s… well, there’s very little science fiction actually in the first issue. The issue itself isn’t bad, just a bit too shy; it’s still unclear what the book’s concept is. Similarly, Marco Lorenzana is talented, but his art’s a little too generic and the story doesn’t offer him many opportunities to show off. It’s a more polished book than many indies I stumble across, certainly, and it’s worth a browse if you’re adventurous, but hopefully the next issue will be better paced.
<!–pagetitle:Turboten #1: The Volcanic Ace–>
This is a book about a high school that teaches people how to operate and play space tennis. It’s a concept so off-the-wall one wonders just how it was invented, but the book commits completely to the idea that you want to read a story about space tennis with aliens in it, and as a result, you really kinda do. One wants a little more detail in the art from the art team, but this book is, if nothing else, certainly different, and also kid-friendly.
<!–pagetitle:Grimm Fairy Tales: No Tomorrow #1–>
Aside from a fairly clever opening fakeout, there’s not much to this book so far; Raven Gregory’s script doesn’t seem interested in pushing the idea of seeing the physical manifestation of Death any further than others have done, and JG Miranda isn’t really paid to deliver interesting art unless it features a woman in a skimpy outfit. In short, it’s exactly what the cover says it is, full stop.
<!–pagetitle:Mass Effect: Foundation #2–>
Mac Walters tells a fun story starring Wrex, Rasa, and one very, very slippery target for both. It’s by turns action-packed and funny, and Walters often turns a cliché on its ear to clever effect. Tony Parker, meanwhile, really enjoys the action he gets to draw, and the net result is an entertaining action book well worth picking up.
<!–pagetitle:Captain Midnight #2–>
Joshua Williamson and Fernando Dagnino are doing their best with this book, but it’s really suffering from not choosing a tone. Is it a superhero book, or a two-fisted pulp? It’s trying to be a little of both and the result is something that feels neither fish nor fowl. It’s not bad, but it’s struggling to find what makes it unique with stands full of books like this.
<!–pagetitle:FBP #2–>
The book that launched as Collider gets going big-time in its second issue. The first issue had a fun blue-collar SF vibe, and this issue mixes that with a touch of noir and a taste of the surreal. In other words, it’s the kind of book Vertigo made its name on, and both Simon Oliver and Robbi Rodriguez make a hell of a book out of it. Pick it up, especially if you’re looking for some SF with a gritty vibe.
<!–pagetitle:Lazarus #3–>
Greg Rucka’s mix of family intrigue and near-apocalypse SF is getting better by the issue. Highly recommended.
<!–pagetitle:Thumbprint #3–>
Jason Ciaramella and Vic Malhotra finish up this adapation of the Joe Hill novella in style, including a truly revolting and hilarious two-page spread that comes out of nowhere and really has to be read to be believed. A great adaptation of a great story, and worth reading.
<!–pagetitle:Kill Shakespeare: Tide Of Blood #5–>
Of all the books using well-known stories, Kill Shakespeare is probably the boldest and the best on the stands. This issue closes the second miniseries with a bang: Betrayal, violence, and Billy Shakespeare turning out to be a lot craftier than his considerable reputation. Highly recommended, and one of the best books this week; if you haven’t been buying it, pick it up.
<!–pagetitle:Justice League #23–>
Trinity War ends on… a cliffhanger leading right into Forever Evil. Since the main reveal is all over the news, I will say I’m happy to have the Crime Syndicate of America back, but they’re not a reveal that requires six issues of buildup and Pandora hiding in the background of every #1 in the New 52. They’re a three-issue arc kind of deal; it’s really kind of a letdown, and I’ll be surprised if I’m alone in feeling that way.
The Unwritten #52: This crossover with Fables is pretty fun, but I’m still looking for that moment in which it takes its compelling idea and really makes it sing. Still a great read, however.
Star Wars: Legacy #6: Bechko and Hardman of “Station to Station” pair a script with some gorgeously rendered art by Brian Albert Thies for a book Star Wars fans are going to love.
The Massive #15: This post-apocalypse book continues to be some of Brian Wood’s best work. I’ll be curious to see where the next arc takes us.
Mind MGMT #15: Matt Kindt’s story of psychics and intrigue is probably one of the best books on the stands right now, and this issue continues the streak.
Godzilla: Rulers Of Earth #3: There’s something funny about a Toho alien crashing a comic book convention, but this book still needs better art and more of a focus to stand out from IDW’s other Godzilla work.
Transformers: More Than Meets the Eye #20: This series is more for fans than general readers, but I remain impressed with what James Roberts can pull out of a terrible cartoon from the ’80s. This has depth, humor, plot, the whole nine: Worth reading for fans.
King Conan: The Hour Of The Demon #4: Brian Wood’s work remains the best comic of Dark Horse’s Conan books, but this is a fun slice of ’70s-style high fantasy, especially with Tomas Giorello’s art. Recommended for fans of the ’70s books.
Transformers: Regeneration One #94: Nothing earth-shaking, but a fun pulp SF book featuring your favorite characters.
