Remember that whole feud between George Clooney and The Daily Mail, where they published some lying lies about George Clooney’s fiancee Amal Alamuddin’s family and then he wrote a scathing USA Today op-ed and then they took the article down and issued a public apology and that was the end of that? Well, that was two days ago, which in the cycle of things on the internet is the equivalent of about half of a lifetime, so I think it’s safe to say assume everyone had pretty much forgotten about it. Except for George Clooney, who still DEMANDS SATISFACTION and has written another op-ed to USA Today.
Again, you can read the whole thing here but the following are some excerpts:
The problem is that none of that is true. The original story never cites that source, but instead goes out of its way to insist on four different occasions that “a family friend” spoke directly to the Mail. A ” family friend” was the source. So either they were lying originally or they’re lying now.
Furthermore, they knew ahead of time that they were lying. In an article dated April 28, 2014, reporter Richard Spillett writes in the Mail that “Ramzi, (Amal’s father), married outside the Druze faith,” and a family friend said that “Baria, (Amal’s mom), is not Druze.” The Mail knew the story in question was false and printed it anyway.
So I thank the Mail for its apology. Not that I would ever accept it, but because in doing so they’ve exposed themselves as the worst kind of tabloid.
I was on Clooney’s side at first, I really, really was. But come on dude, of course The Daily Mail has to at least pretend that what they published they thought was true. Still, they removed the article, issued an apology and they crawled off with their tail between their legs. You won. So all this proves is what a sore winner George Clooney is. Of course, this isn’t the first time he’s handled private matters publicly, and that whole Steve Wynn-Las Vegas Review public pissing contest doesn’t seem quite as absurd now.
