Andre 3000 Doesn’t Give A Damn About That “Pink Matter” Remix

Someone is suddenly becoming the grumpy old (former) rap guy and that someone would be Andre 3000. In his statement released to Spin, one half of Outkast took a break from picking out fabrics for his Benjamin Bixby spring line to send a slight bit of shade in the direction of the other half’s decision to add a verse to Frank Ocean’s “Pink Matter.”

“It’s important for me to be clear about the origins of my contributions to ‘Pink Matter’ and ‘Sorry.’ I was approached as a solo artist by both Frank Ocean & Tip. I discussed musical direction with each artist and completed my verses. It was after that when Big Boi’s name came up.

I never want to mislead our audience – I worried that some would think these were Outkast collaborations. These songs are not Outkast collaborations. I discussed this rationale with Big, Frank and T.I. and everyone agreed. That is why I was surprised to read about these remixes.

I understand that anyone can put out an unofficial remix to any song but I have an obligation to be honest with fans about what this is … and what it isn’t.”

Nah, man. This is bullshit. Anyone with casual interest on the topic can process “Pink Matter” wasn’t an Outkast record in the sense they didn’t collaborate with one another. ‘Kast fans didn’t need another reminder of what’s been true for years and what Dre confirmed on “Sorry.” OutKast – as a musical collective – died years ago.

For years, Big Boi has been defending Andre from people who threw him under the bus and called him outside of his name for flaking on a ‘Kast reunion. Big always took the high road and praised Dre saying that was his brother and this, that and the third.

Now, Dre wants to make a statement saying these aren’t Outkast records because his partner – half the reason he is who he is right now – wanted to jump on the song to help appease the fans who ask him “when are y’all doing another record together” every damn interview. And basically throw him under the bus?

Classy move, Andre.
