Before Str8 Killa, Freddie Gibbs released three key previous mixtapes – midwestgangstaboxframecadillacmuzik, The Miseducation of Freddie Gibbs and The Labels Tryin’ To Kill Me!. The trio was crafted from a combination of tracks left from Fred’s scrapped Interscope release, alongside freestyles and other new material created for the tapes and, between them, we heard most of what would have been a magnificent major label debut. For closure, we now have “It’s All Cognac,” a track recorded in March 2006 and originally slated to close out the album.
Produced by Bink! and rounded out with sharp cuts by Archie Bonkers, “Cognac” is a chilling track that encompasses all that we’ve come to know and admire about Freddie Gibbs. His delivery is spot on, his flow cycles smoothly and, most of all, his lyrics are genuine. “I’mma rep ‘til the lord separate me from the flesh, And the Midwest know I’m the best, That’s why they f*ckin’ with the Gangsta G-I-B-B-S.” It’s a fitting end to the album that could have been everything, but wasn’t meant to be.[audio:http://www.archive.org/download/FreddieGibbs-itsAllCognac/ItsAllCognac.mp3]
