So…no peacock suits, Muppets, or A-List actresses this go round, but Cee-Lo once again manages to keep his performance of the song that won’t go away fresh via collaboration. In this video, BritPop duo The Ting Tings join Mr. Green at the Redbull Soundclash in Vegas for what is billed as a “musical conversation” between two groups with different sounds and influences. Past iterations of the Redbull Soundclash pairings have included Talib Kweli and Ozomatli and Tokyo Police Club and Wale
The Ting Tings definitely make their presence felt, but the subtle alterations – slick doo-wop keys replaced by Simon-Says like bleeps and bloops for example – actually work well without sounding like a knockoff Girl Talk mashup. Jules De Martino’s electric guitar and Katie White’s Debbie Harry-ish assist on the second verse provide some much needed edge to a song most of us have heard many times over by now. Not surprisingly though, everything, including the amazing organ breakdown towards the end, takes a backseat to the irrepressible, inimitable brand of stank that radiates from Cee-Lo Green’s voice. Ike Turner famously (and unfortunately) resorted to threats of violence to coax the type of vocal performances Cee-Lo seems to be able to give night in and night out.
