Sebastian Telfair, 13th overall pick in the 2004 NBA draft, has signed with Tainjin of the Chinese Basketball Association.

In his nine NBA seasons, Telfair has played for seven teams – including the Minnesota Timberwolves twice – not exactly the career that was expected of him way back when Jay Z was name dropping Bas in the same breath as LeBron.

Hov wasn’t the only one either. During his senior year at Lincoln High School, his games were broadcasted on ESPN and celebrities like Jay, Spike Lee and Derek Jeter were showing up to watch him play. His senior year was the subject of the classic documentary, Through The Fire, and in retrospect is quite the red flag.

All the worries for Telfair during the film, needing to work on his jumper, the ill-fated decision to skip college and the tutelage of Rick Pitino (this helped Lance Stephenson develop into a better player than Telfair ever was in the NBA) and his Brooklyn roots all came back to bite him in some way during his NBA career.

When all is said and done, Bassy may be remembered more for the chain snatching and retaliation incident with Fabolous outside of Justin’s in 2006 than anything he did in the NBA. The CBA season ends in late February and Telfair’s agent says he hopes to join an NBA team at that time.
