J.J. Abrams will be producing “Boilerplate: History’s Mechanical Marvel” for Paramount.  The graphic novel / picture book was written by Paul Guinan and Anina Bennett, and it follows the storied life of Boilerplate, the Victorian era robot who went on awesome adventures.  The book was published last year, 11 years after Guinan and Bennett had started their fan website for the famous robot.

“Boilerplate” purports to tell the story of the world’s first robot, who, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, fought alongside Terry Roosevelt and Lawrence of Arabia, journeyed to the South Pole and was involved in the silent movie business before disappearing on the battlefields of World War I.  The book tells Boilerplate’s story by inserting the character into pictures drawn in the style of the age. What do you mean “purports”?  He’s totally real.  Yuh huh.  He’s my uncle’s cousin’s cousin, so there.  I come from a long, illustrious line of Robos and will not have my family legacy besmirched, good sir.  I shall see you at precisely noon tomorrow outside the Precious Lugnuts factory, and we shall settle this like gentlemen.  Bring your best “Magic: the Gathering” cards if you are up to the challenge.  Good day, sir!

After the jump, a bunch of pictures of Boilerplate (WHO IS TOTALLY REAL) throughout the years:
