Making a name in the Hip-Hop industry nowadays is not an easy task. Everywhere you turn a new rapper is popping up with another mixtape or weekly song series that they swear is original when they are really just following in Crooked I’s footsteps. The Kid Daytona however, decided that his initial statement to the rap audience was going to be through a creatively thought out EP —The Daytona 500 EP — that would succinctly showcase his talents as a wordsmith.

The concept, which is explained in the intro, is to collect all the producers who contributed to his full length and have them each pitch in a track sampling the same source to create a 7 track EP that plays through smoothly and impressively. Utilizing the overly sampled “Nautilus” by Bob James that was most famously recycled by RZA for Ghostface Killah’s “Daytona 500.”

Despite the brief tracklisting time, a couple F1 caliber cuts manage to shine through. “The Engine,” created by Kidz In The Hall’s producing half Double O, contains a highly percussive, low-end centric beat that Daytona utilizes to name drop nearly every rapper/industry head he has rubbed elbows with while showing off his slightly odd, yet impressive flow. Another track worth checking twice is “Take Off” produced by The Government. The song closed out the conceptual part of the EP beautifully with the twinkling sounds of a piano mixed with a military inspired drum pattern where Daytona crosses the finish line with a little deserved boasting before taking a victory lap with 6th Sense, Outasight and Harlem’s Cash on the album’s bonus “The Pit Crew.”

The Daytona 500 accomplishes everything an good EP should which is introducing listeners to the main attraction while simultaneously unveiling worthwhile tracks to prepare them for the next step of the way. In The Kid Daytona’s case, that would be the official album Come Fly With Me.
