“The Purple Tape”

While I pride myself on being informed, I can’t say I know a lot of what’s going on here. All I know is I went to check the PO box on Friday and a manilla envelope lay inside containing one of rap’s most talked about piece’s of history – an actual cassette copy of Raekwon’s Only Built 4 Cuban Linx, also known as “The Purple Tape” – and a small card with the words “9.17.12 GETONDOWN.COM.” Even the sticker sealing the envelope was dope (guys, if you’re reading, send me a handful of those. Thanks!).

Naturally, curiosity spurred me click through to GetOnDown.com, where a flash banner exactly like the card shows up with the words “big release” and “stay tuned” underneath. So, tomorrow should be one cool Monday, wouldn’t you agree?

Update: And here are the full details we were looking for. The tape is a deluxe box set reissue weighing in at 4 pounds, housed in a premium, glass-top, “piano lacquer,” 4-inch-tall black display case with gold-colored hardware, embossed white-on-black Raekwon logo and “The Purple Tape” placard on front. The set also includes a 32-page, hard-cover liner notes book, including text by Brian Coleman (featuring an in-depth interview with and track-by-track reminisces by Raekwon); artwork from original Only Built 4 Cuban Linx album; and reprinted graphics from original Loud/RCA promotional singles as well as a premium, glossy 24” x 24” promotional poster (from original Only Built 4 Cuban Linx 1995 Loud/RCA campaign) and a Only Built 4 Cuban Linx sticker. Limited to only 1,000 copies worldwide.
