Rube 49ers Fan Wires $5,900 For Super Bowl Tickets, Gets Trolled With ‘Go Ravens!’ Sign Instead

With all the concern about catfishing going on out there, people forget about more garden-variety Internet scams, like people who get others to send them money for nothing. Such was the case for a California couple who spotted a Craigslist ad posted by a Ravens season-ticket holder claiming to be selling four Super Bowl tickets for $5,900. The two parties spoke at length on the phone about the deal. It seemed so aboveboard.

With that setup, I think you can tell where this is going:

So after emailing, texting and talking with the seller on the phone for a week, they wired the money to his credit union. On Monday, the highly anticipated package arrived — by FedEx.

Instead of Super Bowl tickets, inside was a picture of quarterbacks Colin Kaepernick and Joe Flacco with a message underneath that read: “Enjoy the game!!!! Go Ravens!!! LOL.”

“I’m just sick — like, physically sick,” said Sharon Osgood, a 49-year-old Hayward resident. “All over the envelope it says ‘go Ravens’ — even on the FedEx label.”

Osgood has since contacted the police. The scam artist went to the trouble of leaving a return address and phone number on the package, but a San Jose Mercury News reporter was shockingly unable to get anyone to answer when he tried calling the number. So is this malevolent trolling by a Ravens fan or a cautionary tale for fellow Internet rubes? Perhaps a little of both.
