KD x DJ Burn One x DJ 5150 – Crown Me Mixtape

You know who may be looking to validate his coronation this June, but KD’s already enjoying the fruits of his own throne with the release of the DJ Burn One and DJ 5150 guided mixtape, Crown Me. Bama’s own has been on my radar for a minute now and my support proved worthwhile at last fall’s A3C. For one, buddy is cool as hell, but he’s also guy who truly believes in the brand of “country rap tunes.” His own offering of the Hip-Hop sub-genre won me over and with this release, my iPod’s highway playlist is shaping up nicely with the summer months just off the horizon.

The self-proclaimed “realest outta Alabama” uses production from Burn One, B. Kirk, Mike B and more to craft a project which could quietly turn into one of the year’s most slept on by 2012’s end. Seriously, off first listen and trying my hardest to avoid being a prisoner of the moment, KD’s wordplay (obviously inspired by Pimp C) resides in a perfect union with the instrumentation he chooses to flex over. And it’s evident on personal favorites “Crown Me,” “Dreamz,” “Playa G,” “Dead & Gone” and “Ride Around Town.” My one critique? Trim it down to 15 tracks, but that’s water under the bridge at this point. Give the tape a spin and not on your computer speakers either. Ride out to this; disappointment should be the last of your reactions.
