It’s been a pleasure getting to know Blitz The Ambassador. Prior to his “DIKEMBE” video, his was just another name in my inbox before I listened to that first track and found myself liking every subsequent record received. The Ghana-born wordsmith has a mix of humor plus skill reminiscent of early ’90s rap, you know, back when it was okay for artists to showcase their comedic side right along with skills, without being marked as silly and ignored.
And now, Blitz goes and switches his M.O. with “BISA,” the last leak off the The Warm Up EP that finds fellow African stars Nneka, Ty plus producer Tismé joining in on the track. Moving more seriously for the moment, Blitz titles the song after a word that means “Ask” in the Ghanaian language Twi and explores the world’s inequalities from an African perspective.
It’s the same point of view that’s guided each of The Warm Up‘s previous cuts but the tone’s obviously more earnest. In a way, Blitz’s voice reminds me of Black Thought in tone and how sharp each word is spoken. But, again, it’s The Ambassador’s background that keeps helping him to carve a lane for himself because, truly, nobody’s offering the assets he brings with him.
The Warm Up‘s set to release on August 27 and serves as a precursor to Afropolitan Dreams, his third album due out later this year.
