The Browns Are Finally Close To Getting A Head Coach And It’s Shockingly Not A Terrible One

After scaring the bejesus out of everyone by hinting at hiring Josh McDaniels and then Greg Schiano, the Browns at long last are closing on getting a head coach and it’s former Bills defensive coordinator Mike Pettine. Buffalo’s defense improved dramatically in Pettine’s one year with the team. The Bills jumped from the 22nd ranked defense in yards in 2012 allowed to 10th in 2013. In terms of the defense’s DVOA, they went from 27th to 4th.

Before that, Pettine spent three years as Rex Ryan’s “right hand man” and defensive coordinator with the Jets, where he was naturally featured on “Hard Knocks” saying bad words and telling Bart Scott to shut up. Sounds like he might actually be promising and not a worst-case scenario, so I have to say a curious hire for the Browns.
