Imagine for a second that Slim Thug, Z-Ro and Paul Wall stepped into a studio to craft a new anthem that didn’t involved double cups and purple rain. Now, snap out of that daydream and crank your speakers up for “Drank,” the latest in a seemingly endless stream of soundtracks to mixing muddy Sprite from the Southern contingent.
While it’s refreshing to hear Thug energized and spitting about his favorite addiction, the subverting verses from each character aren’t pronounced enough to get the point across to the average listener. The hook glamorizes the same substance linked to the deaths of so many of their rap forefathers and the only real warning between the instructions about how to pour up come at the end of a catchy hook that makes it sound like a game. Besides the fact that the record is dope as f**k, every bar, hook and record about the tranquil calms of synthetic codeine are setting another generation to follow in their footsteps.
On Friday, Thug’s Hogg Life, Vol. 3: Hustler of the Year released and you can stream it free on Spotify, where you can hear him leaning hard for another dozen or so tracks. Make your own choices, kids.
Update: And now comes the video, full of pouring up, candy coated slabs and stock lens flare abusage. The local gas station is about to sell out of Sprite, word to Future Sinatra.
